Tasty Tuesday

Venison is a wonder meat. It's amazing how lean it is. Someone once told the BF that you can keep deer meat in the fridge for months, because bacteria can't grow due to the lack of fat. I haven't looked this up to verify if this is true or not, so it could be complete BS, but I could see why one would believe that.

I have the privilege of having a coworker with a hunter husband. He even takes the meat to the Amish who will prepare it into jerky, lunch meat, hot dogs, burgers, etc. When they run out of freezer space they give away their deer spoils, and I was the lucky recipient. We got to try venison burgers, which actually was mixed with a little pork in order to hold the patties together. OMG. Those burgers were delicious. It was juicy without all the grease from the fat. I'm definitely gonna have to stay friends with these people :D

Saturday Rewind

Lows for the week
-I work in a small building with one other person.  She's been out for the whole week.  This has left a very quiet work space and me a little lonely...sad face.
-Our ants are back.  We had a little breakout of them a couple of weeks ago that we killed off, but now leftover eggs have hatched.  Hopefully our borax/peanut butter mixture will do the trick.
-Huzzah for it being so cold, eyeballs and gloved hands still sting they're so cold.
-Not working out at all.  I think it's the cold weather that un-motivates me.  All I wanna do is curl up under a blanket.
-Butternut squash risotto.  I attempted to make this.  Never again.  Too much work making the risotto.  Add liquid to the risotto, stir until absorbed, add liquid, stir, repeat like 20 times it seemed.  No thanks.
-Being considered a "subject matter expert" and not being able to answer someone's question.
-I'm getting the sniffles and keep sneezing.  I don't know if I'm getting a cold or if it's just dusty.  Either way, it's messy and our tissues are getting low.
-The cat in my face as I eat a bowl of cereal and am writing this entry.  He's pushing my hand as I'm putting the spoon in my mouth in order to spill it.  He's lucky milk hasn't gotten on our new keyboard...yet.

Highs for the week
-I found leather boots that fit over my calves.  My calves are huge.  And I've had the hardest time finding boots that'll go over them.  So needless to say, I'm pretty excited, regardless if anyone cares or not.
-Three day weekends are always nice...even though all I got accomplished was watching Vampire Diaries on Netflix (Don't judge.  Once I watched the first episode, I had to keep watching.).
-Taco Bell's Loaded Grillers.  At 99 cents, I was full for $3.  Kinda hard to do these days.
-Customer Appreciation Day at our local Dairy Queen/Orange Julius. Everything was half off, so we loaded up on food and got ice cream, despite the below freezing weather. This probably wasn't a good idea since I haven't worked out this week, but it was soooo good and a good deal. And we've never eaten at this location, so it was a mini adventure :)
-Rain-x wiper blades. I got a coupon to get them free during an oil change.  Holy crap!  They are amazing.  You couldn't even tell the windshield was wet.
-Scoring two tickets to a live taping of The Colbert Report in NYC.  Apparently, it's a little hard to get tickets and I just had good timing.

Hot Chocolate Floats

Winter is finally here in Maryland.  The wind chill has made the outside feel like 2 degrees.  If it's going to be this cold, there better be snow with it, I say.

Anyway, it's cold weather that makes me crave hot chocolate.  But, the other night, I was in a predicament.  My cookies and cream ice cream sitting in the freezer sounded amazing, as well as a hot cocoa.  Oh, first world problems.

A fan of root beer floats, I had an idea.  Make some hot chocolate and plop some scoops of ice cream in it.  I poured some hot fudge sauce on top and I was done.  Putting cold ice cream into a hot mug of chocolate left me with frothy goodness.  I quickly ate the ice cream that was still solid and slurped the creamy hot chocolate.  Nom, nom.

Breaking Bad

I just want to go on the record and say how much I love this show.

The BF and I spent the last couple of months catching up on the seasons.  It is by far, one of, if not my favorite show ever.

Quick recap for those that have never seen this.  Walt, a high school chemistry teacher, gets diagnosed with cancer.  Needing a way to pay for treatments and to leave his family with enough money to be comfortable after he dies, Walt enlists help from a former student and druggie, Jesse, to get into methaphetamine production.  Since he's a chemistry teacher, Walt is able to make the purest form of meth and uses Jesse to get it distributed.  And that's how the series starts.  Oh, and Walt's brother-in-law...is a DEA agent.  Yup.

As the seasons progress, the storyline gets more intense and complex.  All I'm going to say is that by season 4, this quiet chemistry teacher becomes a badass that you don't wanna mess with.

I also love how there's a reference to Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs.  The main characters are Walter "White" and Jesse "Pink"man, with Jesse always calling Walt "Mr. White."  And there's a scene where the two share breakfast at a diner after disposing of a body.  Sound familiar?

Another thing that I love about the series is the way the camera films in some of the scenes.  There's a scene when Jesse is waiting around at a pickup spot and just the way it's shot is so visually appealing.

I used to watch Malcolm in the Middle and always thought Bryan Cranston's character was such a dummy...in a funny way.  But I applaud him as Walt.  He's able to play the awkward science nerd, the family man, and the really scary leader of a drug trade all in a single episode.

I'm so sad that the series is ending this summer.  I think the writers have been pretty consistent, so I'm hoping they'll be able to successfully wrap up the storyline.

Top favorite shows as of now:
Breaking Bad
Walking Dead
Game of Thrones
Dexter

Edit:  I forgot to add...
Modern Family

Happy 2013!

The end to my 2012 was quiet, as well as the beginning of my 2013.  And I like it that way.  The BF and I stayed up til and rang in the new year.  I made some peppermint milkshakes with leftover candy canes and schnapps.  He made a Johnny Walker and root beer.

As the year starts going, I want to share my highlights from the year (at least the ones I can remember right now).

Our NYC trip and making it onto the Today Show.
Making a Skyrim cake for his birthday.
Roadtrip to Kentucky to see my family, with all of the kids present.
Fourth of July in the nation's capital...in 100 degree weather.
My spy mission birthday....and getting an IPad!
Completing a zombie 5K.
Watching my brother run the Marine Corps Marathon.
Becoming an aunt to this little girl.

Now, here's hoping I can remember to write "2013" on everything.
